About
Working at the intersection of improvisation, minimalist process, and experimental sound design, on In Mind, Tate EC treats the double bass as a temporal medium, using repetition and gradual change to foreground listening, duration, and attention.

Each piece originates from improvisation refined through meticulous production and arrangement. This compositional approach, developed through the artist’s work in sound design for film and new media, preserves the physical immediacy of improvised performance while allowing structure to emerge through editing, layering, and process-driven form. Techniques associated with late twentieth-century minimalism, including repetition, gradual phase shifting, and composition by process, are central to each piece.

Across the EP, repeating bass figures accumulate resonance while subtly drifting out of stereo alignment and creating new configurations. The music is at once architectural and gestural, grounded in physical touch and instrumental breath. Rather than foregrounding virtuosity, In Mind emphasizes restraint and presence. Its emotional register is quiet but substantial, marked by gravity, patience, and a sense of hope that emerges through ritualized repetition.

The EP was recorded intermittently throughout 2025 in three locations: at home in Eagle Rock, in a family cottage in the woods of Slovenia, and at Wiggle World Studio in Altadena. These environments, domestic, idyllic, and studio-based, inform the work’s intimacy and spatial sensitivity.
